A nurse in America will find that prior to European exploration the state was inhabited by indigenous indians and subsequently became part of the Spanish colonies. Predictably among U.S. states, New Mexico has the highest percentage of Hispanics, a people which includes descendants of Spanish colonists and immigrants from Latin America. Also it has the second-highest percentage of Native Americans after Alaska. The tribes in the state stretch way back into history include the Navajo and Pueblo and the Apache peoples.
