Intensive Care Unit
This unit caters for both both critically ill medical and surgical patients. More specifically the unit embraces cardiothoracic, ortho-neuro and other general surgical conditions and frequently patients require ventilatory support, titrating drips, continuous cardiac outputs and other, sometimes invasive monitoring. The ICU nurse will be to exhibit critical thinking and decision making skills as well as demonstrate accurate assessment abilities.In the ward the nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:2 allowing the nurse to collaborate with the health care delivery team. Support staff are a critical element part of the team on this unit. Orientation for new graduates or international nurses is a structured 12 week program with a preceptor.
