The University of North Carolina Hospitals, a 700+ bed Level 1 teaching and trauma center is located on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the nation’s first state university. The UNC Healthcare system is a non-profit health care system owned by the State of North Carolina UNC Hospitals is nationally recognized as a leader and innovator in healthcare. UNC’s division of Health Affairs has been called “the most complete constellation of education, research and service efforts in the field of health available on any university campus.” The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill houses the UNC School of Nursing, UNC School of Medicine, UNC School of Dentistry, UNC School of Pharmacy and the UNC School of Public Health. UNC Hospitals and the university are now united along with Rex Healthcare and UNC Healthcare’s community practices, under the auspices of UNC Healthcare. There is also an air and ground patient transportation system that provides helicopter service statewide from Chapel Hill and community-based ambulance transportation from a growing number of sites outside the Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill area. The hospital is looking for RNs with a minimum of 1 year of experience and strong computer skills (electronic documentation). As there are a variety of positions, they ideally they require nurses who can be flexible in their shifts. You’ll be working closely with the surgeons and supported by a strong dedicated team of nurses, but as the hospital is expanding, they will also looking to some nurses who can show leadership potential. Nurses employed in these positions will plan, direct, and provide professional nursing care within an assigned unit using a multidisciplinary approach. Additional information on this position: Number of theatres; 31 OR suites, 2 are designated for Open Hearts, plus an Ambulatory Care Center Detail on Operating Rooms: Annual Volume: 20,000. ACC: 1800 to 2000. Approximately 800 hearts per year. Patient population includes everything from neonates to geriatrics. UNC has 6 different surgical teams. 1. Cardiovascular and transplants: 4 Open Heart surgeons (2 adult and 2 pediatric), 2 thoracic surgeons. Triple A’s, endovascular, thoracic, stent placement grafts, transplants including kidney, liver, lung, pancreas, heart, small intestines, eyes. 2. Orthopedic and trauma - 6 new trauma surgeons, large amount of spines 3. Neurosurgery and Ophthamology including deep brain stimulation, craniotomies, back surgery 4. ENT, oral maxiofacial, dental, plastics and burns 5. General Surgery and Urology 6. GYN (reproductive only) and Pediatrics Background information on hospital culture 1. Teaching environment - exposure to a wide variety of cases 2. Challenging environment - the variety and volume of cases coupled with advanced technologies will challenge an RN's clinical skills. Good fits are those that embrace both the mental and physical aspects of the position. 3. Strong collaboration amongst MDs and RNs. They enjoy talking with and teaching staff. They go out of their way to engage staff in the care of the patient. They have a "hands on" infrastructure. The Dean of the Medical School is President of the hospital. 4. Staff diversity: Multi-cultural environment (Philippinos, Middle Eastern, Canadian, African, Caucasian etc.) Also, 50% of surgeons are male, 50% female. 8. Caliber of the staff is very high. There is a lot of longevity as well. Importantly, RNs who have worked as travelers have returned to UNC for permanent positions. 9. Gown vs. town: this hospital serves the public and not just private patients 10. Social environment: Six OR teams, they work hard, play hard and socialize outside of work. 11. Continuing Education: Many RNs are in school, they want to grow. CRNA program available. Good education budget: monthly and bi-monthly in-services. 12. UNCH is a family environment. Location is ideal - weather is good, economy is strong, housing is affordable, excellent school system. In order to be considered for interview, you must be a registered general nurse who is currently working in an OR / Theatre environment. You'll need to be adaptable, have excellent communication skills and a passion for nursing. Additionally, you'll need to meet the educational requirements for a US nursing license in North Carolina State and US immigration requirements - Adevia will give you guidance on these matters.
