Delano Regional Medical Center has 156 beds and is a regional teaching hospital servicing 10 rural towns. It is is located in Delano, California, a town of approximately 50,000. Delano is located 30 minutes from Bakersfield, a city of 350,000, 2 hrs. to Los Angeles, 4 hours to San Francisco, 1.5 hours to the ocean and the mountains. Expansion plans are underway – building a new tower or a new hospital. Service population is 50% Hispanic. The area is lush, green and agricultural – grapes, oranges, almonds etc. are grown here. People come here to get away from it all and avoid the high cost of living in the city. Delano Regional Medical Center has an open, relaxed and progressive environment. Position Description: Currently, this unit performs more than 100 deliveries per month. 21% of deliveries are C-sections. The hospital has a pediatric hospitalist program in place. This has resulted in less cases of gestational diabetes but an increase in C-sections. US nurse RNs are responsible for perinatal, post partum and Mother/Baby couplet care. For Labour & Delivery, nurses, currently perinatal staff receives the baby since the OR team usually covers scrubbing and circulating. This will be transitioning shortly so Labour &Delivery nurses will also circulate. Nurse responsibilities include patient assessments, patient treatments, medication administration, blood administration, implementing physician orders. Number Of Beds: 16 beds including 4 LDR, 1 C-section room plus a small nursery Caseload: 1:1 laboring patient, 1:2 early labour, 1:4 postpartum Size of the group: 4 US Nurses per shift, many of them are midwives practicing as Labour & Delivery nurses. Currently there are no midwives employed on staff but this may change in the future. Multicultural environment with nurses from the Philippines, Africa, India, Romania. Applications will be consider ed from nurses who hold an RGN qualification and are currently practising as a midwife Although idealy you will have passed your NCLEX, the hospital will consider applications from exceptional nurses who are yet to start the NCLEX process. Excellent assessment skills – ability to detect subtle changes in the patient’s condition Excellent IV skills Electronic fetal monitoring skills Circulate Experience with high risk pregnancies Patient advocate Computer literate Personal Profile: Self directed, knowledgeable, organized with ability to prioritize, detail oriented, ability to critically think, good communicator, solid work ethic.
